Part of First Look 2026 and Infinite Beauty: Muslim and MENASA Identity Onscreen
Dirs. Itab Azzam, Jack Macinnes. 2026, 100 mins. U.S./U.K. In English, Arabic, and German with English subtitles.
Shot over the course of a decade, this spellbinding documentary follows the life of a young Syrian refugee named Israa and her family, who escaped to safety from Aleppo to Turkey and finally to Germany, following the war in their homeland. Co-directors Itab Azzam and Jack Macinnes portray the magnetic Israa with uncommon sensitivity, charting her from age 11 to her early twenties, an ordinary teenage girl who happens to have gone through extraordinary circumstances. As she adjusts to suburban European life, she and her family must constantly negotiate their cultural identity, religious traditions, and the pain of exile. Encompassing moments of startling familial intimacy within the overarching sweep of years, One in a Million brings the world’s ongoing refugee crises to eye-level with rich, complex humanity. Winner of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Directing and Audience Awards.
